Caribbean & Mexico Dominican Republic

A sun-kissed playground occupying the eastern two-thirds of Hispaniola, the Dominican Republic offers much to many with its own unique blend of striking scenery, laidback luxury and rich cultural heritage.

At a glance

The UNESCO-listed capital, Santo Domingo, was the first European settlement in the Americas and still brims with 16th-century Spanish architecture.

With 1,000 miles of stunning coastline, this is a beach lover’s dream.

The country is famed for its biodiversity, boasting 14 national parks, nine nature reserves, tropical birds, reptiles, turtles, iguanas and from January to April, northern humpback whales.

From hiking the highest mountain ranges in the Caribbean to zip-lining through lush jungles and kitesurfing in Cabarete, you’ll find activities for all ages all over the country.

Known for its coffee, rum, cigars and ‘comida criolla’ – traditional Dominican food that draws inspiration from the country’s rich heritage of African, Spanish and Taino traditions.

Overview

With coasts on both the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea, this vast, lush country is home to magnificent national parks, mountain ranges, rivers and sweeping beaches, with plenty to entertain both couples and families alike. Its beaches are among the Caribbean’s finest, especially around luxury resort areas like Punta Cana in the east.

Beyond the beach, the country reveals a rich cultural soul. In Santo Domingo, cobbled streets and colonial landmarks have earned the oldest European city in the Americas UNESCO World Heritage status, and the capital’s vibrant art, music and culinary scenes offer an authentic taste of Dominican life. Inland, explore rainforest trails, mountain peaks and hidden waterfalls, tee off on PGA golf courses, spot humpback whales off the Samaná Peninsula and sample some of the best rum and coffee in the whole Caribbean.

When to visit

Due to its diverse topography, the Dominican Republic has a unique tropical climate. Punta Cana and the east coast are most pleasant between December and April. May and June are still enjoyable but can be partly cloudy with afternoon showers. Santo Domingo and the south coast are sheltered from the prevailing trade winds by mountains and are best experienced between December and February as heavier rains can be expected from March onwards. Tropical storms and hurricanes may occur between June and November.
