France & Monaco Monaco

Bordered by France on three sides and the Mediterranean on the other, the tiny principality of Monaco has been a playground for Europe’s elite for more than a century.

At a glance

The petite principality of Monaco is a bastion of glitz and glamour, surrounded on three sides by the sparkling Mediterranean.

For panoramic views, hike the moderate Tête de Chien trail, or give your credit card the workout among the designer boutiques of Monaco’s fashion district, One Monte-Carlo.

This stretch of the Riviera is dotted with Michelin stars, including eight starred restaurants in Monaco itself and two- and three-star options in neighbouring Èze and Menton respectively.

For old-school glamour, nothing beats a flutter among the venerated tables of the Casino de Monte-Carlo, or a night at the extravagant but intimate Opéra de Monte-Carlo.

Ventimiglia is less than 40 minutes away across the border in Italy; its Friday market is one of Italy’s largest and makes an excellent day trip.

Overview

The high at heel flock to Monaco for its designer boutiques, exclusive restaurants, superb sandy beaches and breathtaking hilltop Mediterranean panoramas. Events like the Monaco Grand Prix, held annually in late May or early June, along with Monaco’s tax-free status and the world-famous Casino de Monte-Carlo all add to the appeal.

The Belle Époque casino, opened in 1865, remains one of the most exclusive gambling establishments in the world. It’s just a five-minute walk along the Place du Casino from the Hotel Metropole Monte-Carlo, our favourite place to stay in the jet-set capital.
