Overview

Botswana is often referred to as the ultimate safari destination, home to spectacular reserves often only accessible by light aircraft. Perhaps its greatest treasure is the Okavango Delta, a lush oasis in the middle of the Kalahari Desert, where crystal-clear rivers, lily-clad lagoons and grassy floodplains hide hippo, elephant and a host of other wildlife. The best way to see it is to glide between the islands in a dugout mokoro (canoe), poled by an expert guide. Even then, if you see 10% of what sees you it's been an exceptional day.

But there's more to Botswana than just the Okavango. The Kalahari Desert is a hauntingly beautiful wilderness that’s home to the San people or ‘Bushmen of the Kalahari’, as well as a surprising diversity of game. On its eastern fringe are the Makgadikgadi salt pans, the largest in the world, where meerkats keep watch by day and brown hyena perform nightly patrols. Chobe National Park shelters some of the largest herds of elephants in Africa, while more remote regions like Linyanti, Savute and the Mashatu Game Reserve offer rare opportunities for crowd-free game viewing in truly spectacular surroundings.

When to visit

Botswana’s magnificent wilderness can be visited year-round. The dry season in Botswana is between May and October, expect clear skies and warm sunny days however the nights and early mornings can be cold. It is also this time of the year when the water levels in the Delta are at their highest which make for incredible mokoro and boat excursions. July and August are peak travel months, the herds are getting larger and congregating around water holes making for excellent game viewing. Overnight temperatures can drop to freezing so layers are essential. The green season from November through to March is great time to travel with lush landscapes, fewer visitors and lower prices. January and February are the peak rainy months, it is hot during the day often with afternoon thunderstorms. It is one of the best times to see migratory birds in their breeding plumage. With the annual rains comes new life, lots of new born animals accompanied by some interesting predator-prey interactions. For keen photographers this is an ideal time of the year for scenic photography with beautiful colours, clear air and dramatic skies. The green season is also the best time to witness the zebra migration in the Makgadikgadi.
