Overview

“God created Mauritius, and then heaven in its image,” quipped Mark Twain about this much-loved island at the heart of the Indian Ocean. Almost four centuries of colonisation have left the island with a rich multicultural mosaic of Indian, African, Chinese, English and French heritage, which you’ll find expressed in everything from colourful Hindu temples and historic colonial mansions to fabulous fusion food and evocative Sega dancing.

With so many cultures embraced over the centuries, it’s no surprise to find tourists welcomed too. Mauritians are among the friendliest people you’ll meet on your travels, forever keen to highlight what the island has to offer. Nature lovers can spot rare birds among soaring ebony trees or hike to the summit of Le Morne Brabant for jaw-dropping views. Watersports enthusiasts will find excellent opportunities for diving, snorkelling and kitesurfing. While golfers can choose between 10 impressive golf courses, each unique in its design, setting and technical challenges.
