Overview

Offering easily the best views of Mount Kilimanjaro, which stands just across the border in Tanzania, Amboseli is one of Kenya’s greatest parks, famed above all for its dense concentrations of big-tusked elephants. Watching them amble through the bush, set against the backdrop of Africa’s highest mountain, is an essential experience on any Kenyan safari circuit. Wildebeest, zebra, hyena, lion, leopard and buffalo can all be spotted too, either on game drives or on walking safaris.

North-east of Amboseli is one of Kenya’s least visited national parks, Chyulu Hills, dominated by a chain of dormant volcanoes. The park is home to a wonderful selection of game, including buffalo, antelope, elephant, leopard, wildebeest and zebra, not to mention a wide array of birds, especially at Lake Jipe in the south-west of the park. A number of fabulous activities can be enjoyed here, including game drives, walking and horseback safaris, hiking in the hills and – for the truly adventurous – spelunking in the world’s second-longest lava tube, the 12-kilometre Leviathan.
