Overview

Wild, remote and untouched, Zimbabwe is the ideal safari destination for those looking to escape the crowds. Despite the troubles in the country, tourism has seen something of a resurgence in recent years, a trend we expect to continue as more and more travellers switch on to the pleasures of holidaying here.

Firstly there are the people, some of the warmest, friendliest and most hospitable you’ll meet. Then there’s the quality of Zimbabwe’s safari guides – among the most qualified in Africa – and the extraordinarily high standard of the lodges themselves. To this you can add a near-perfect climate, a huge variety of landscapes, excellent game densities and a vast array of parks and attractions.

Victoria Falls is the headline act, its noise greater than a million migrating wildebeest. Mana Pools National Park offers world-class opportunities to canoe past hippos and wading elephants. Further water-based safaris can be enjoyed at Matusadona on the shores of Lake Kariba. Hwange National Park has some of the highest mammal diversity of any park on the planet. While remote Gonarezhou remains to this day one of Africa’s last great wildernesses.

When to visit

Zimbabwe is a year round destination. Game viewing is at its best in the dry winter months between May and September, when water is sparse, and the herds gather around rivers and man-made waterholes. The days are clear, warm and sunny with the nights and early mornings being chilly. October is still dry however temperatures can be extremely high. The best time for viewing Victoria Falls is June to September when the falls is at mid-to-low flow and the view is not obscured by spray. The rains arrive around November time and continue through to March, the landscape is lush, and many animals give birth. Bird watching is at its best, with many migrants in their breeding plumage. March, April and May see Victoria Falls in full flow which is a spectacular sight of sheer magnificence and power, sending up an immense cloud of spray, making it a good time to view the famous spray rainbows and at full moon the lunar rainbow or moonbow, if visiting at this time expect to get very wet. Mana Pools National Park is closes during the wet season
