Thailand Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai, Thailand’s second city, is a graceful blend of old-world charm and contemporary sophistication. Surrounded by forested mountains and rich in cultural treasures, it offers luxury travellers a serene yet stimulating escape in the heart of the north.

At a glance

Of the temples in town, Wat Phra Singh is the most revered. Outside of town, pilgrims looking to accrue merit will climb the 306 steps to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep; others can take the funicular.

The annual flower festival in February is an especially enchanting time to visit, with street parades and colourful display of orchids and other regional flowers.

To see elephants in humane, natural conditions, spend a day at Elephant Nature Park, which has led the movement to abandon rides and shows and put elephant welfare at the top of the agenda.

This is one of the best places to learn traditional Thai cooking, with classes typically including trips to the local market to buy your ingredients.

North of Chiang Mai the land erupts into forested mountains, offering wonderful opportunities to visit national parks, spectacular viewpoints and hill-tribe villages.

Overview

Chiang Mai is where Thailand’s heritage breathes most deeply. Encircled by misty mountains and centuries-old city walls, it invites exploration at a gentler pace. With over 300 temples, the city’s spiritual soul is tangible. None are more impressive than Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, perched high above the city and accessed via a grand staircase flanked by mythical serpents.

Yet Chiang Mai is also a city of vibrant experiences. Its Flower Festival in February transforms the streets into a kaleidoscope of blooms, while the nightly Chiang Mai Gate Market tempts with mouthwatering street food, from spicy noodle soups to fragrant coconut desserts.

Luxury travellers can find secluded spa retreats, elegant resorts and world-class golf courses nestled in emerald hills, or use the city as a launchpad for trekking and rafting adventures across the mountains of northern Thailand. Whether you’re seeking wellness, culture or gentle adventure, Chiang Mai delivers with quiet refinement and authentic charm.
