As East Africa’s main hub, Nairobi is almost certain to feature on most safari itineraries. It’s an exciting hive of cultural life with great places to eat and an exciting nightlife, plus an excellent National Museum and a series of quirky sights. Top of the list is the fascinating Karen Blixen Museum, which occupies the farmhouse where the Out of Africa author used to live and contains numerous artefacts from her time spent in Africa. Also worth visiting are the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and the Giraffe Centre. The former runs the most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation programme in the world, as well as providing a home to a number of orphaned rhinos. The latter works to educate Kenyan school children on the importance of environmental conservation and offers visitors a rare opportunity to interact with endangered Rothschild’s giraffes.
On the outskirts of the city you’ll find Nairobi National Park. Just seven kilometres from the city centre, it’s the only national park in the world to border a capital city and provides a natural habitat to a variety of wildlife, including the endangered black rhino, lion, cheetah, leopard, hyena and over 400 recorded bird species.
