Malaysia Desaru Coast
At a glance

The Desaru Coast and the east coast of the Malay Peninsula is an ideal summer destination, its driest months being May to September

With luxury resorts, untouched beaches, rainforest, golf courses, waterparks and more it's a destination with great variety and plenty to do, as well as just relaxing

A great combination with Singapore, it's a few hours' drive or a ferry hop from the modern city-state. Although it pays to avoid travelling on weekends to avoid the Singapore getaway

Explore the Panti forest Reserve, where it's possible to sport white-handed gibbon, dusky leaf monkey, hornbill and crested-serpent eagles.

An ideal destination for natural wellness, try a session of Silat Melayu, a UNESCO-recognised martial art specific to the region

Overview

Even the best travelled can be forgiven for not having heard of Desaru Coast. This pristine sliver of shoreline lies tucked between lush jungle and the South China Sea, near the south-eastern tip of the Malaysian peninsula.

Though a popular retreat for Singaporean families in the 1970s, Desaru only emerged on the international travel scene in 2016, when luxury hotel groups One&Only and Anantara realised its potential for blissful beach holidays. Two Ernie Ells golf courses and an adventure waterpark have since added to the mix, but it’s the near-deserted beaches, cobalt-blue seas and swathes of thick jungle that make Desaru stand out.
