There's More Than One Miami

By Sarah Gibbons

Mention Miami and most people picture South Beach: pastel-coloured Art Deco buildings, Ocean Drive, beach clubs and late nights. And while all of that certainly makes Miami a standout destination, it only tells part of the story.

Miami is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the United States, shaped by Latin American, Caribbean, European and Asian influences. Today, it's as much a global city as it is a beach destination, where world-class dining, major sporting events, luxury hotels, contemporary art, outdoor adventures  and some surprisingly accessible natural escapes all exist within the same destination.

The question isn't whether Miami has something for you. It's where you'll start.

Looking for culture? Start with the neighbourhoods.

There's a reason so many visitors venture beyond South Beach.

Little Havana offers a glimpse into the Cuban influences that have shaped the city. Spanish is spoken throughout the neighbourhood, cafés serve traditional Cuban coffee and the streets have a character all of their own.

Elsewhere, Wynwood stands apart from anywhere else in Miami, renowned for its vibrant street art, independent breweries, galleries and ever-evolving atmosphere.

For something a little quieter, Coconut Grove offers a bohemian waterfront setting with a strong sense of community, while Coral Gables has grand architecture, golf, shopping and fine dining just minutes from the airport.

For travellers interested in fashion, architecture and design, the Design District reveals yet another side of the city. Luxury boutiques sit alongside public art, striking architecture, acclaimed restaurants and gallery spaces, reflecting Miami's growing reputation as a global centre for creativity, culture and luxury.

“Miami is far more than a beach destination with a city attached—it is a truly global city that seamlessly combines the appeal of a world-class coastal destination with the energy of a cultural capital and the sophistication of a luxury hub. ”

Looking for great food? You're in the right city.

Miami's rich cultural diversity is expressed through its dynamic culinary landscape, where every menu tells the story of the city's global influences.

From neighbourhood cafés and family-run institutions to contemporary fine dining establishments, Miami has earned a reputation as a culinary destination in its own right.

Today, the city is home to 15 Michelin-starred restaurants, with influences from across Latin America, Europe, Asia and the Caribbean shaping a dining scene as vibrant and varied as Miami itself.

Since the Michelin Guide expanded to Florida in 2022, Miami has firmly established itself as the state's culinary capital. From Cuban cafés in Little Havana to acclaimed Michelin-starred restaurants such as L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon, COTE Miami, Ariete and Boia De, the city offers an exceptional breadth of dining experiences.

“Miami has Florida's largest concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants, featuring 15 Michelin-recognised spots.”

Looking for excitement? Miami likes a full diary.

This is a city that knows how to host.

Formula 1, Art Basel, the Miami Open, South Beach Wine & Food Festival, the Miami Film Festival and Montreux Jazz Festival all help keep the calendar busy throughout the year.

Football fans can also visit the home of Inter Miami CF, where global figures such as Lionel Messi and David Beckham have helped place the club firmly in the international spotlight.

The energy doesn't fade when the events end. Miami's nightlife remains a defining part of its appeal, whether that's rooftop cocktails in Brickell, oceanfront bars in South Beach or iconic venues such as LIV at Fontainebleau, which continues to attract international DJs, celebrities and visitors celebrating everything from milestone birthdays to group getaways.

Looking for luxury? You'll find plenty of it.

South Beach may be Miami's best-known neighbourhood, but it is far from the only option.

Stay at The Setai, Faena, 1 Hotel South Beach, The Betsy or the recently refurbished Delano Miami Beach, and you are within easy reach of the city's celebrated nightlife and iconic Art Deco architecture.

Venture further north and the atmosphere shifts. Surfside is home to the legendary Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club, while Bal Harbour has become synonymous with luxury shopping and refined beachfront living.

Families often gravitate towards Sunny Isles Beach, where resorts such as Acqualina offer a more relaxed pace alongside easy access to both the beach and nearby cruise ports.

Meanwhile, Brickell delivers an entirely different energy, with sleek hotels, rooftop bars and an urban sophistication that has helped establish it as one of Miami's most dynamic neighbourhoods.

Together, these districts help explain why Miami has evolved far beyond its reputation as a luxury beach destination. Continued investment from brands including Aman, Bulgari, Rosewood, Waldorf Astoria and Baccarat is further strengthening the city's position among the world's leading luxury travel destinations.

“Miami has transformed from a renowned resort destination into a global hub for luxury hospitality and branded residential real estate.”

Looking for nature? It's closer than you think.

For a city known for its skyline, Miami offers remarkable access to the outdoors.

Both Everglades National Park and Biscayne National Park are within easy reach of the city, offering the chance to experience two landscapes that could hardly feel more different.

Closer to the coast, The ReefLine is set to add a new dimension to Miami's art scene, with public artworks and underwater installations that can be experienced offshore.

Looking for a cruise? You're already in the right place.

Miami isn't just a gateway to the Caribbean. It's the Cruise Capital of the World®.

More than 20 cruise brands operate from PortMiami, including many of the luxury lines featured by Lusso. New terminals continue to open, while the port's scale, efficiency, and global connectivity make pre- and post-cruise stays easier than ever.

PortMiami continues to invest heavily in the passenger experience, with dedicated terminals and premium facilities designed to serve the world's leading cruise brands. As a result, many of the most prestigious luxury cruise lines have chosen Miami as a key departure point.

Travel throughout Florida has also been transformed by the Brightline rail service, enhancing connectivity across the state and making multi-centre itineraries and extended stays more convenient for travellers.

“Miami's position as a premier gateway destination is driven by its leading cruise infrastructure, extensive global connectivity, and best in-class luxury tourism offerings.”
